Inspiration behind "The Shedding"
This piece holds a lot of meaning to me. It's my first upgraded painting & was a part of my first series release!
I started & finished this painting for the first time in 2019. It was one of those emotional "I just need to get these feelings out somehow!" paintings. I had just went through an extremely tough situation, I felt like crawling out of my skin, I felt trapped, hopeless & humiliated. I was on edge, angry at myself & the whole WORLD.
The second time around, I had my baptism in mind. That "I want to crawl out of my skin" feeling was still there, but this time I had a mindfulness about it- that that feeling was me healing & healing is painful, messy, irritating & uncomfortable. I don't consider myself a Baptist anymore, but I remember my baptism very clearly, & I tried to convey that in this scene.
Shedding the old to welcome the new, while accepting that the 'new' is unknown & that it holds many obstacles & more mountains to climb. But, before you can start that new journey & climb those mountains, you must nurture yourself, your wounds & let that fresh skin harden a little before you go trampling through the dark forest, chasing the light.
Painting keeps me sane. Art has been the one constant, safe place for me for most of my life. It's the one place I can express myself without inhibitions.
Excluding the occasional, successful poem I've never been very good at clearly expressing myself & have been told on many occasions that I'm no good at telling stories. So good for me you don't need words to paint stories ☺
I hope y'all enjoy this one & I hope the story behind it inspires someone today.
As always, love & good vibes 🌞✨💛✌
